Dealing with Trauma from Earthquakes

A helpful guide for caregivers

In the days and weeks ahead following a major traumatic event or disaster such as an earthquake or other natural disaster affecting daily lives, the disaster or trauma can trigger a variety of reactions and responses in your grandchildren.

Attached is some information we have sourced from a helpful guide for caregivers following the Christchurch Earthquakes which has taught professionals working with traumatised children and young people a lot about their responses and how to best respond and care for them.  It includes helpful advice on how to manage various behaviours where a child is distressed, anxious or angry after an earthquake in particular.
